COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) responded to three different crashes involving motorcycles within a two-hour period over the weekend, the first of which killed a Columbus man.

The first accident, at 4:30 p.m., involved a vehicle and a motorcycle in the 17000 block of State Road 58. Luis Alberto Martinez Gusman, 38, of Columbus, died. The crash is under investigation by the Bartholomew County Fatal Accident Crash Team, but witnesses said speed was a likely factor, according to BCSO. Gusman was wearing a helmet, leather jacket, and riding gloves and boots.

The second crash, also involving a motorcycle and a passenger car, occurred at 5:30 p.m., near W. Lowell Road and N. County Road 250W. It resulted in property damage only, and there were no injuries. The motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet.

State Road 58 and W. Seymour Road was the site of the third accident at 6:30 p.m. It occurred during a group motorcycle ride. A motorcyclist reported the cycle in front of him braked hard at a turn causing him to brake hard. Instead of striking the motorcycle in front of him, which had a juvenile rider, he conducted a controlled crash resulting in a minor injury to his shoulder. He was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for further treatment. He was wearing a helmet.
